In 2002, HomeAid Northern California launched a new fundraising and networking opportunity for their building industry supporters -- a trap shoot. In the spirit of a golf tournament, a trap shoot gives participants a day outside to participate in good, healthy competition with their colleagues, except it's an exciting and fast-paced competition of shooting palm-sized clay disks.

Over eight years, HomeAid Northern California has raised more than $1 million in support of their mission to build and maintain dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives. Annually, more than 500 participants have gathered at Livermore- Pleasanton Rod and Gun Club. The majority of the supporters are from the homebuilding industry, in which participating homebuilders have included: Brookfield Homes, DeNova Homes, Ponderosa Homes, Pulte Homes, Shapell Homes, Shea Homes, Standard Pacific Homes and William Lyon Homes.

The success has spread and now HomeAid chapters in Portland, Ore., Seattle, Sacramento, Calif. and regionally in Southern California are conducting HomeAid Annual Benefit Trap Shoots. And in May 2010, for the first time, HomeAid Inland Empire and HomeAid Orange County joined for a regional trap shoot

with the major sponsorship of the Riverside County Chapter of the Building Industry Association (BIA). "We had a great turnout," said Mark Knorringa, chief executive officer of the BIA Riverside County Chapter. "Both experienced and first-time shooters who competed helped us raise nearly $15,000 in support of HomeAid's commitment to the cause of ending homelessness." "The trap shoot provides a great opportunity for HomeAid to thank the building industry for their on-going support and for their generosity of sharing their resources and talents to build housing for homeless families. In addition, it gives members an opportunity to network, build company morale, create lasting business relationships and participate in a little competitive fun," said Terry Kent, president of the HomeAid Inland Empire Board of Directors.
