The Power of Women in the Workforce
Women now make up a record 11% of the construction workforce, according to NAHB analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data. While still underrepresented, women’s participation has steadily increased over the past decade, especially in managerial, sales and administrative roles. In 2023 alone, the number of women working in construction grew by 3.3%, outpacing overall industry growth.
The data highlights continued momentum toward greater gender diversity across the building industry, though challenges remain in skilled trades and on job sites. NAHB emphasizes the need for targeted recruitment, mentorship programs and inclusive workplace cultures to support long-term progress. As labor shortages persist, expanding opportunities for women is seen as critical to the future strength of the residential construction workforce.
