Women employed in construction reaches record high
Women employed in the construction industry reached the highest share in two decades. Reported in 2024, the number of women in construction rose to 1.34 million. Now women make up 11.2% of the construction workforce.
Na Zhao, Ph.D., principal economist at NAHB analyzes statistics from the Current Population Survey (CPS) to report this data. “Most women in the construction industry are employed in occupations such as office and administrative support, management and business and financial operations. Sales and office occupations employed the highest number of women within the construction industry, with women making up 65.7% of these workers.” wrote Zhao.
This aligns as women are also taking more roles in white collar jobs in construction, however the need for more workers in skilled labor might attract more women to that field. Currently women only occupy 4% of construction and maintenance occupations. Similarly there are women in less roles in production, transportation, and material moving occupations and service.
