Monthly New Residential Construction, April 2025
In April 2025, the U.S. housing market showed a mixed performance across permits, starts, and completions. Building permits for privately owned housing units declined to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,412,000, marking a 4.7% decrease from March and a 3.2% drop from April 2024. Housing completions, however, experienced a notable decline, dropping 5.9% from March to a rate of 1,458,000, and were 12.3% lower than in April 2024. Single-family completions decreased by 8.0%, while multifamily completions remained relatively unchanged. These trends suggest a cautious approach by builders amid ongoing economic uncertainties.
