Softwood lumber prices held steady at $422 per 1,000 board feet on July 4, 2025, the lowest since October 2024, remaining 15.3% higher year over year despite a 3.7% drop over the past month. Lumber available for U.S. consumption is at its lowest since 2019 due to declines in both domestic production and Canadian imports. While falling prices could ease costs for builders, the benefits often lag due to supply chain dynamics, and rising market prices are typically passed along to builders much faster than price decreases.
