Fannie Mae: September 2025 National Housing Survey Results

Fannie Mae’s Home Purchase Sentiment Index (HPSI) condenses key insights from its National Housing Survey® (NHS) into a single measure of consumer confidence in the housing market. Drawing from six core survey questions, the HPSI captures how Americans feel about buying and selling homes, the direction of home prices and mortgage rates, job security and income trends. By combining consumers’ current attitudes with their expectations for the future, the index offers a clear snapshot of overall housing sentiment and helps guide market analysis and decision-making.

The National Housing Survey webpage provides access to the latest HPSI data releases, monthly indicators, technical documentation and archived reports for deeper research. While the findings reflect the opinions of Fannie Mae’s Economic and Strategic Research Group and survey respondents, they are subject to change and should not be interpreted as forecasts of Fannie Mae’s business performance. The ESR Group emphasizes that its analyses are based on reliable information but carry inherent uncertainty, as shifts in economic assumptions or conditions could lead to significantly different outcomes.
