December 2025 New Residential Construction Overview
On Feb. 18, 2026, the U.S. Census Bureau released the monthly new residential construction overview for December 2025.
Single-family home authorizations from building permits in December 2025 were at a rate of 881,000; this is 1.7% below the revised November 2025 figure of 896,000.
An estimated 1,425,200 housing units were authorized by building permits in 2025.
Single-family housing starts in December 2025 were at a rate of 981,000; a 4.1% above the revised November figure. Single-family housing completions in December 2025 were at a rate of 1,023,000; a 0.1% below the revised November rate of 1,024,000. An estimated 1,497,800 housing units were completed in 2025.
