AIA CEO discusses housing solutions with Boston Mayor Wu
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) EVP/Chief Executive Officer, Carole Wedge, FAIA, NOMA met with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu at the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM). The USCM in Washington, D.C., assembles more than 300 mayors and senior city leaders from across the country. Wedge and Wu discussed on the mainstage of the conference how design can shape communities and how local leaderships can support productive design.
“Mayors today are builders of infrastructure, of spaces where people can still connect and get things done and come together — ultimately, we are builders of community,” said Mayor Wu. “That’s where the connection with the architecture community is very salient.”
The AIA works closely with the USCM. Reported in a joint study, 80% of mayors are currently taking action to address housing challenges, including updating land use policies and revising building codes. Throughout the conference AIA leadership is meeting with Mayors from cities to discuss collaboration between architects and their administrations.
“AIA represents more than 100,000 talented and civically engaged members,” said Wedge during their discussion “Bring us into your administration, your chiefs of staff, your planning commissions, your boards. AIA National can help you find the resources and the passionate architects who are optimistic about the future.”
