Mortgage rates fall below 6%
Last week, mortgage rates reportedly fell below 6% for the first time in years. According to data provider Mortgage News Daily, on the morning of Jan 9., average 30-year mortgage rates reached 5.99%. Rates for a 15-year fixed mortgage also significantly decreased, as low as 5.55%
This drop follows steady movement towards lower rates throughout 2025. “Rates move down because Fannie and Freddie buy the bonds from lenders, which then have more money to lend to homebuyers,” wrote Steve Kopack, senior reporter at NBC news. “With an increase in the supply of money to lend and demand relatively steady, interest rates, the price of mortgages, tend to fall.”
