Mortgage Rates Remain Near 2025 Lows

Freddie Mac reports that mortgage rates in mid-December 2025 remain near their lowest levels of the year, offering modest relief to the housing market. The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage ticked up slightly to 6.22%, but it is still well below the 2025 year-to-date average, helping restore some balance for buyers and sellers navigating affordability challenges.

Shorter-term borrowing costs also edged higher, with the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaging 5.54%. Even with these small weekly increases, both rates are lower than they were at the same time last year. Freddie Mac notes that these figures reflect conventional, well-qualified borrowers and underscore its broader mission to support stability, liquidity and affordability in housing across economic cycles.
