Two or More Story Home Starts Rebound in 2024
In 2024, more than half of the new single-family homes built were two or more stories, reversing a slight dip in 2023 and continuing a trend seen since 2020. The national share of multi-story homes rose to 52.5%, while single-story homes fell to 47.5%, though this pattern varied by region. The Midwest and much of the South still favored single-story homes, while areas like the South Atlantic showed a notable decline in one-story builds.
