  • Berkshire Hathaway now owns 10% stake in Lennar

Berkshire Hathaway now owns 10% stake in Lennar

A few weeks ago, we reported that Berkshire Hathaway doubled down on its housing market investment. This week, the company further sustained its ownership in Lennar, bringing its total ownership of the homebuilder to 10%.

According to SEC filings, the major conglomerate bought a mix of Class A and Class B shares from Sept. 17- 21.

This happened after Warren Buffett, who grew the company, stepped down as Chairman of the Board but will remain as Chairman Emeritus.

Berkshire Hathaway’s presence in the market continues through its ownership of  Taylor Morrison and Clayton Homes, the modern manufactured homebuilder, which it acquired in 2003.

Despite the building industry facing major headwinds in affordability, this move aligns with the company’s history of placing trust in undervalued sectors and companies.

Homebuilding leaders call for reforms to boost construction

Home construction, banking and legislative leaders urged Congress to advance more reforms that would strengthen the housing market at a D.C. conference at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Karen Purcell, head of Community Development Banking for Commercial Real Estate at JPMorgan Chase, pointed out that middle-class people have been priced out of the market in recent years, with the salary needed for a middle-income home doubling over five years to $124,000. This is a level only the top 30% of wage earners can achieve. Meanwhile, 169 out of 390 U.S. metros do not have enough housing stock at that level.

One of the reforms includes pushing for changes to the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, a tool that helps finance affordable housing development with federal tax breaks. Allowing it to be transferable would encourage more investors to put money behind the credit that developers can use.

  • Berkshire Hathaway doubles down on housing market investment

Berkshire Hathaway doubles down on housing market investment

Berkshire Hathaway just raised its stake in the housing game, upping its stock in production builder Lennar by an estimated 30% or $1.157 billion. That’s not the only builder the firm bolstered its investment in. Berkshire Hathaway also purchased stakes in D.R. Horton, the nation’s largest homebuilder, valued at around $580,000.

This all comes about a month after Berkshire Hathaway closed on its $8.5 billion all-cash acquisition of Taylor Morrison.

What does this investment say about the future of housing?

Berkshire Hathaway’s new CEO, Greg Abel, who started the role in January, sees the market making a major comeback from the slump that builders are widely reporting in 2026.

With increased federal investment from the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, big bets are being placed on the future of the built environment.

  • Landmark housing law urges for zoning guidelines

Landmark housing law urges for zoning guidelines

The newly enacted 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act directs the Department of Housing and Urban Development to develop voluntary federal guidelines for state and local zoning best practices. Such guidelines will help shape how communities are evaluated for federal grants and give states a model for developing their own enabling legislation.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, providing these guidelines will address many state and local zoning rules that restrict home building and raise costs. By creating land-use and zoning guidelines with input from a national task force of planning, housing, transit, academic and building experts, this landmark housing law aims to remove regulatory barriers and increase housing production across all income levels.

  • Dream Finders Homes acquires Beazer Homes for $2.2 billion

Dream Finders Homes acquires Beazer Homes for $2.2 billion

It’s official: Dream Finders Homes (DFH) will acquire Beazer Homes in a $2.2 billion deal. This comes after multiple public rounds of offers from DFH to acquire the Atlanta-based builder.

The offer values Beazer Homes at $33.50 per share, up from Dream Finders’ last offer in July of $32.00 per share.

The combined company will operate in 26 markets across high-demand areas in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, the Midwest, Texas and the West.

“As someone who started Dream Finders from the ground up, I know what it takes to build a culture that puts homebuyers first and that’s exactly what I see in Beazer,” said Patrick Zalupski, Founder, CEO and Co-Chairman of Dream Finders. “They have built something genuinely special – a talented team, strong communities, and a culture that puts customers at the center of everything they do. That resonates deeply with us. This combination is the next meaningful step in our journey to become a top 5 national homebuilder, expanding our geographic reach, broadening the range of buyers we can serve and strengthening the integrated services we offer families from contract to close.”

Dream Finders then reaffirmed its full-year 2026 outlook of 9,250 homes. It’s unclear whether the combined builder will hold the same energy-efficient priorities of Beazer Homes.

“Over nearly 20 years, we have transformed Beazer into one of the nation’s largest homebuilders through a strategy focused on delivering on energy-efficient homes and best-in-class customer experiences,” said Allan P. Merrill, Chairman, President and CEO of Beazer Homes. “This transaction represents the culmination of a comprehensive review of opportunities to maximize value and provides Beazer shareholders with a significant and certain cash return in an uncertain market. I am proud of our people and want to thank our entire organization for their exceptional work to ensure that, together with Dream Finders, we continue providing homebuyers across the country with a high-quality product and outstanding service.”

  • Highland Homes announces restructuring

    Highland Homes announces restructuring

Highland Homes, the Texas-based homebuilder, announced a new division-led organizational structure. Under the new structure, local functional teams will report directly to a Division President.

With that comes the posting of new Division Presidents: Jarod Mouton to lead Houston, and John DePasquale to lead Highland’s Central Texas division, serving the Austin and San Antonio markets.

This change is designed to strengthen local market leadership, sharpen accountability and bring decision-making closer to the customers and communities it serves.

“Highland’s success has always come from understanding what homebuyers value in each market and empowering our people to deliver it,” said Aaron Graham, Chairman and CEO of Highland Homes. “This structure brings leadership and decision-making closer to our customers while giving our senior functional leaders greater capacity to advance the products, technology and growth strategies that will shape Highland’s future. We were deliberate about the structure, the leaders and the timing, and I’m confident it positions us to serve our customers and employee owners even better in every market.”

Highland also announced several promotions as part of the new structure. Stephen Chambers has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer and will lead Architectural Services and New Product Development, Supply Chain, Information Technology, Marketing and MarTech.

Jeff Stinson is promoted to Chief Strategy and Land Officer; he will lead enterprise strategy and land initiatives to support Highland’s long-term growth. Amy Jones is promoted to Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing in Dallas-Fort Worth.

The changes follow months of planning and preparation to ensure the structure, leadership and timing were right for Highland. The company expects the division-led framework to strengthen its ability to serve homebuyers, create opportunities for its employee owners and build on its position in every Texas market it serves.

  • Acquisition increases among home builders

    Acquisition increases among home builders

Most home builders predicted that elevated mortgage rates and hesitancy to buy homes would be among their greatest challenges in 2026. As companies seek efficiencies and economies of scale, the industry is experiencing increased consolidation activity: Taylor Morrison was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway; Tri Pointe Homes by Sumitomo Forestry; and United Homes Group by Stanley Martin Home. The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index survey asked about merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in August 2025 and again in June 2026. Results reveal an uptick in the share of builders reporting increased M&A activity in their local markets, from 14% in August 2025 to 21% in June 2026. More than 40% of builders, however, report no changes in consolidation trends in the markets where they operate.

A second finding also points to somewhat higher levels of M&A activity in the industry, meaning the share of builders who have been approached for acquisition and/or merger doubled between August 2025 and June 2026, from 9% to 18%.

D.R. Horton realigns outlook despite strong Q3

In this challenging market, the nation’s largest homebuilder, D.R. Horton, just exceeded its Q3 expectations with 23,983 homes closed and a home sales gross margin of 20.7%. Yet, the builder is realigning its full-year revenue and closings guidance.

On the company’s Q3 earnings call on July 21, 2026, David Auld, Executive Chairman, noted that the market is at a crossroads with the weary consumer.

“Affordability constraints and cautious consumer sentiment continue to impact new home demand and we expect sales incentives to remain elevated during the fourth quarter, with incentive levels dependent on demand, mortgage rates and other market conditions,” said Auld.

D.R. Horton revised its projected 2026 ‌consolidated revenue at $32.5 billion to $33.0 billion, down from its previous forcast of $33.5 billion to $34.5 billion.

Despite this, the builder’s homebuilding revenue for the third quarter increased 1% to $8.7 billion. Total closed homes ticked up 4% from Q2 to 23,983.

“Our experienced local operators, broad national footprint, flexible lot supply and strong balance sheet position us to compete effectively and capture demand across our markets,” said Auld We remain focused on disciplined capital allocation and are committed to delivering value to our homebuyers while enhancing long-term returns for our shareholders.”

Michigan governor signs bills to boost homebuilding

On July 21, 2026, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed three bills into law aimed at increasing homebuilding across the state. The bills will enable the Michigan Housing Opportunity Tax Credit to work in tandem with the federal low-income housing tax credit to build more affordable housing and cut red tape to help build new homes.

“Every Michigander deserves an affordable, quality place to call home,” said Whitmer. “I’m proud to sign these bills that cut red tape, lower housing costs and expand our housing stock available to working families looking to put down roots. Over the last seven-and-a-half years, we’ve built more homes than any administration in state history and lowered costs for every Michigander, making it possible for more people to become homeowners. This year’s budget builds on that progress by investing in our neighborhoods and the people who need it most. Let’s keep working together to give every Michigander a shot at finding a place to call home.”

Lennar approved on 2,360-home Florida development

Lennar, one of the nation’s largest homebuilders, just received the thumbs-up on its 2,360-home Everlands West development from the Palm Bay City Council. The project is noted as one of the most ambitious residential projects for the city in recent memory. Lennar plans to build an estimated 1,600 single-family homes and 760 multi-family homes.

The project is especially interesting given the city’s new investment in the area, planning to devote around $19 million for water and sewer infrastructure investments. Full build-out for the Everlands West development is expected to reach completion in 2036. The project continues Lennar’s presence in the Palm Bay market, with five currently active communities.

“Both the existing and proposed future land use designations allow for significantly higher residential densities than what’s being proposed with this community, said  But even with the flexibility, this project is being designed at just a low overall density of 1.96 dwelling units an acre. In addition, the plan preserves over 310 acres of wetlands in conservation areas, helping maintain that natural character of the site.”

The bill is also supported by the National Association of REALTORS (NAR), the National League of Cities and other organizations.

“This is the most significant housing legislation to pass Congress in nearly 20 years,” said Shannon McGahn, NAR executive vice president and chief advocacy officer.  “At a time when affordability remains one of the nation’s greatest challenges, lawmakers came together in a bipartisan way to advance solutions that will help communities build more homes, expand housing opportunities and strengthen pathways to homeownership.”

After President Trump canceled the signing event, homebuilders are still optimistic that it will pass.

“Voters are demanding action on housing supply and affordability, and Congress has delivered a historic bill to address their concerns,” said Bill Owens, chairman of NAHB.  “Although there was no bill signing today, we are confident the 21st Century Road to Housing Act will eventually become law.”

Alaska modernizes its legislation on interior designers

Alaska passed House Bill (HB) 314, to institute a protected title and regulation for qualified interior designers. The bill also creates a registration pathway for formal recognition through the Board of Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors.

The legislation was heavily supported by the American Society of Interior Designers and its Consortium for Interior Design.

Alaska is now the 31st state to enact reasonable regulation of the profession, following Idaho in March.

“Today’s action marks an important milestone for Alaska and for the future of the design profession,” said Khoi Vo, president and chief executive officer, ASID. “HB 314 recognizes the education, experience and examination standards that qualified interior designers meet and ensures they can contribute more fully to the design and construction process. • California introduces $11.25 billion investment in housing

California introduces $11.25 billion investment in housing

The California Governor, State Assembly, and Senate introduced the  Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act of 2026, a  $11.25 billion investment to support veterans’ homeownership, housing development and affordability. The bill will be placed on the November 2026 ballot for voters to decide whether to adopt it.

This statewide piece of legislation comes after a major federal investment in housing development, the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, passed by the House and Senate.

In California, the bond is expected to invest in veterans and first-time homebuyers by providing down payment assistance and affordable mortgage financing. Specifically, $1.25 billion is allocated to the self-supporting revenue bonds for the CalVet Home Loan Program.

“California has been building toward this moment. We’ve cut red tape, fast-tracked construction, protected renters,” said Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas. “And now, we’re going bigger: $11.25 billion for affordable housing to expand homeownership for veterans and working families, drive down costs and prove that the door to opportunity is open to everyone. This is California delivering.”
